(Soon to be Re-branded to the Hyatt Centric Kathmandu)
An Overview

Hyatt Place Kathmandu is a contemporary haven for travelers who appreciate an uncomplicated stay. Nestled in the serene Tahachal, it's a stone's throw away from the the vibrant city center. Guests can enjoy a range of amenities including free Wi-Fi, breakfast, and a 24-hour fitness center, alongside an outdoor swimming pool. The hotel boasts a modern design with 153 guestrooms and suites, ensuring a comfortable and stylish base for exploring the wonders of Kathmandu.

Why and How We Booked It

We recently stayed a month in Nepal, visiting dear friends and enjoying time with them. During that month, we stayed at 4 different hotels in Kathmandu and the Hyatt Place was our favorite! I'll share more details on that below. If you've been around the miles and points community very long, you might have heard that Hyatt offers incredible value for your points and as such, it is a favorite hotel brand among points enthusiasts. You can often get outsized value for your points by booking Hyatt stays on points and for this stay, we did exactly that!

We stayed at this hotel for 6 nights and paid a total of 26,000 points plus $228 for that 6-night stay. That was 4 nights on points and 2 nights paid with cash. As each night was $114 value, our point redemption value was about 2 cents per point. This was great and the service we received at this hotel for the cost, was fantastic.

Location and Accessibility

Hyatt Place Kathmandu offers a serene retreat in the vibrant heart of Nepal's capital. Nestled in peaceful Tahachal, it's a mere 10 min away from the iconic Durbar Square and 15-20 min away from the bustling Thamel, making it a perfect blend of tranquility and convenience. Guests can enjoy easy access to the city's myriad attractions, while the hotel's proximity to major roads ensures seamless connectivity for those arriving from afar. With top-notch amenities and a commitment to exceptional service, this hotel is an ideal choice for travelers seeking a comfortable and accessible stay in Kathmandu.

Check-In and First Impressions
Check In

Upon arrival, we were greeted outside by staff waiting to help with our bags. Once inside, we were immediately welcomed by the front desk staff. My Hyatt Explorist status was acknowledged immediately, and we were offered a welcome drink. The check-in was quick and efficient and the staff were more than willing to accommodate our family of 4. I had booked a standard king room with a sofa bed and they quickly upgraded us to a higher floor and larger room in the corner. They gave us two options for our room and one of the front desk staff took us upstairs to see the room. Initially, we planned on having ND and one of the kids sleep at the IHG hotel as we were trying to book as many nights on points as possible during our 9 weeks abroad and ND has a nice stack of IHG points. We didn't realize the staff at this hotel would be so accommodating and allow us to choose between 2 rooms and also place a rollaway bed at no extra charge. Additionally, the larger room that did not have a sofa bed, but just had a sofa ended up working perfectly for our family. Our youngest fit well on the sofa and the staff quickly brought a sheet, pillow, and duvet for him and made a bed for him there. Our oldest easily slept on the rollaway bed and my husband and I were left with the king. This allowed us to all stay in the same hotel (and save some IHG points for another stay!) It was a win-win and we really were so appreciative of the staff being so accommodating. The check in and welcoming process truly set the tone for our stay at the hotel!

First Impression

The hotel is modern and yet cozy. The decor is well done and even though it feels high end, it still feels very welcoming. Other hotels we have stayed at look and feel high end, but don't offer the same welcoming and cozy vibes that this hotel does. I really appreciate this type of ambience and think it is perfect for all types of travelers, including families. All of the staff we encountered were eager to assist and always had a smile to offer. Our first impression was very positive, and that impression lasted from check-in to check-out.

The Rooms

The hotel offers King and twin rooms, some with a sofa seater and others with a sofa bed. They also have two suites.

King Room with Sofa Bed

For our stay, I booked a standard King Room with Sofa Bed, but we ended up staying in a King room with a sofa seater. This was because the sofa seater was large enough for our 9-year to sleep on and the room was larger to give us more space with the rollaway bed. Having come from two hotels with smaller rooms, we really appreciated the size of the room, the closet space, and the desk area with drawers. Inside the room we had a very comfortable king-sized bed, a sofa seater, a desk, mini fridge, large closet, and spacious bathroom with a large walk-in shower. There were 3 drawers in the desk which were very useful to keep all the things a little more organized. With 4 of us in a hotel room, traveling for 9 weeks, organization is so helpful and a place to put "all the things!" is so appreciated! The closet also had a nice hang up area, adequate shelving, and a large drawer. The thoughtful storage really added to the value of this room. The bathroom was well stocked with soaps, shampoo and conditioner, toothbrushes and toothpaste, blowdryer, and face cloths/wash cloths (which aren't always available in hotels in Nepal). There was an iron and ironing board, in-room safe, tea and coffee station, and a TV with Google Chromecast streaming abilities. All of these amenities and the overall space and design of the room really added to the value for us!

Housekeeping

Housekeeping services are offered daily. The staff keep the rooms spotless and are happy to supply additional towels/linens/amenities as needed. They supplied us with ample drinking water (possibly due to our Hyatt status, but this is an untested fact) and were quick, efficient, and careful. I had no complaints about the housekeeping services during our stays!

Facilities and Services

There are many facilities and services offered at the Hyatt Place Kathmandu. The hotel was renovating while we were there so several of the facilities were closed: The Zing Sky Bar and Lounge and the Outdoor Swimming Pool. This was noted on their website at the time of booking, so we weren't surprised. While the kids likely would have went swimming in the pool a few times while we were there, it didn't really take away from our great experience and next time we return, we will have the pool to look forward to as well! We likely would not have visited the Zing Sky Bar and Lounge, so this had zero effect on our stay. The common areas of the hotel were not under renovation except the front entrance. Even still, the entrance was functioning at full capacity. Additional facilities at the hotel included a delicious breakfast buffet with made to order options, free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour fitness center, and onsite parking. The hotel also offers even spaces and has a concierge service to assist with any inquiries. There is a restaurant onsite and 24-hour room service available. There is also a business center in the lobby and some small arts and crafts for the kids. All of this adds up to a convenient, yet luxurious stay!

Dining Options

There are many dining options at this hotel. There is an onsite restaurant called Zing World of Flavours, open daily 0630-2230. There is also a bar in the lobby and typically the Sky Lounge and Bar is open (but was under renovation at the time of our stay). There is also a Market at the front desk with convenient grab-and-go items for sale. Room service is available 24 hours a day.

Food Quality and Variety

During our stay, we dined at Zing World of Flavours frequently. Breakfast, included in our stay, was held at this restaurant. There was a large variety of dishes as well as made to order eggs, parathas, dosas, waffles, pancakes, and more. They also had tea, coffee, and juices readily available. The made to order options were our favorite! They also had delicious yogurts, fruits, pastries, and hot items from across the globe.

We also ate at Zing World of Flavours for dinner twice during our stay and ordered room service twice as well (same menu as the Zing World of Flavours restaurant). Overall, our favorite dishes were the 3M curry, paneer butter masala, butter naan, laccha parathas, dahi ke sholey, and the pizza. They have a dinner buffet that ND tried one night and really enjoyed, though it is a little pricey. Overall, this was our favorite hotel restaurant during our Nepal stay and though the cost is a little higher, at least the taste and quality were on point! Room service was also efficient, with excellent service and presentation. Below you can see a few of the delicious things we enjoyed during our stay!

The service from breakfast, to dinner, to room service was excellent across the board. Staff were always available to assist with a smile and many answered with a "My Pleasure" when offered a thank you for their service.

Overall Impression?

We truly felt like valued guests during our stay at the Hyatt Place Kathmandu and we will not hesitate to stay again on our next visit to Kathmandu. We travel frequently and pretty extensively and it is rare to experience a hotel stay that makes you feel like you are at a high-end luxury hotel, yet still welcome and accepted just as you are. We were truly impressed by the staff during our visit and did not have a single encounter with a rude or inattentive staff member. If any Hyatt Place Kathmandu leadership are reading this, I hope you recognize the amazing job your staff are doing and I believe that is always a testament to the leadership as well!

From the incredible value at 6,500 points per night, to the wonderful staff, to the high end decor, to the delicious food, our stay was fantastic! If you are planning a trip to Kathmandu for business or pleasure, alone or with family, we'd 100% recommend a stay at the Hyatt Place (soon to be Hyatt Centric) Kathmandu. We will most certainly be back on our next visit to Kathmandu!
